Alcohol Rehab Ireland

There are plenty of options for alcohol rehab Ireland, with centres located throughout County Londonderry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh. The decision you have to make regarding your own or your loved one’s treatment isn’t an easy one, so it’s important to consider the options carefully – and you have to think about more than just the most conveniently located centres. If you’re a heavy drinker, for example, detoxification (when you first stop drinking) could be a dangerous process that’s better managed by trained medical professionals, so merely finding psychological support might not be enough.

The options for treatment in County Londonderry are the only centres offering alcohol rehab in the north of Northern Ireland. There are centres available in Londonderry, Coleraine and Limavady, with the majority found in Londonderry. The main issue when you’re looking for treatment is that the majority of the options for rehab in the north don’t offer medical treatment, instead focusing on the psychological elements of addiction. This is suitable for most drinkers, but in severe cases it’s worth travelling to the alcohol rehab in Londonderry which has an alcohol liaison nurse.

There are four centres which offer alcohol rehab in the south of Northern Ireland, with two located in Armagh and Craigavon. The main problem you’ll encounter in the south is that the majority of the centres treat from a religious perspective, so if this is an issue for you then there is one centre in Armagh which doesn’t have a spiritual perspective, although they only focus on psychological treatment. The other centre in Armagh has residential treatment available, though it’s only suitable for drinkers with a Christian belief system – non-Christians are encouraged to convert.

County Fermanagh and Tyrone have options for alcohol rehab in western Northern Ireland, with centres located in Enniskillen, Omagh, Dungannon and Cookstown. There are three centres in Enniskillen, and one of these offers detoxification services on an outpatient basis. The two remaining centres in the area focus on psychological treatments, so they aren’t ideal for heavier drinkers. No detoxification services are available in any of the other towns, with the rest focusing on psychological treatment. Although adults are welcome at the centres, the main focus is on teenagers and drinkers up to the age of 25.

If you’re looking for alcohol rehab in the east of Northern Ireland, the majority of the centres are found in Belfast. However, the centres located in the capital mainly focus on psychological treatments, as do the options in nearby Carrickfergus. The only alcohol rehab in County Down is in Banbridge, but this is a 12 step program so withdrawal management medicines aren’t available.

The biggest issue with finding alcohol rehab in Northern Ireland is that most of the centres don’t provide medical treatments to help you through withdrawal. If you’re likely to need support during withdrawal, you may have to go to your GP for prescriptions of relevant medications.
