Non 12 Step Alcohol Rehab

If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol addiction, choosing the right alcohol rehab program can be a challenge. The most famous alcohol rehab program is the 12 step program, which started in Alcoholics Anonymous and then developed into Narcotics Anonymous and several similar programs. However, the success rates of these programs are only around 10 percent, which means they aren’t really effective. The majority of alcohol rehab centres now use a non 12 step alcohol rehab, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, which is evidence-based and effective. Finding out about the problems with 12 step programs and the advantages of non 12 step alcohol rehab is important if you’re choosing between facilities.

The 12 step alcohol rehab program is based on the idea that addiction is a “disease.” People who attend them are told that they are powerless to control their behaviour, because they have some form of genetic pre-disposition towards addictive behaviour. 12 step programs believe that relapses are a part of treatment because the individual cannot control their own condition. To overcome their disease, they have to turn their life over to a higher power, accept their powerlessness and then ask the higher power to remove their shortcomings.

There are several serious issues with this approach. The main problem is the idea that addiction is a disease that the individual is powerless to control. 12 step programs don’t empower the individual to take charge of their life; instead they teach people to rely on a concept of a higher power which solves their problems for them. The end goal, the 12th step, is to have some type of spiritual awakening as a result of the program. Imagine not experiencing this awakening after going through the other 11 steps, and being left with the idea that you are a powerless, diseased addict who needs help from an incommunicable deity in order to get better. This is why 12 step alcohol rehab programs are often unsuccessful.

Non 12 step alcohol rehab programs believe that addiction is a multi-faceted issue for which you need both physical and psychological therapy. They don’t say that the person has a disease; instead, they say that various issues have taught them poor coping methods and driven them to seek solace in alcohols. Non 12 step alcohol rehab doesn’t require people to accept a higher power; instead they have to acknowledge that events in their past and pressures in their current environment influence their behaviour. Through an understanding of the psychological causes of their addiction and a period of physical detox, the person becomes much less likely to relapse after non 12 step alcohol rehab.

The key benefit of non 12 step alcohol rehab programs is that they empower the individual to make the right choices in life. It takes an evidence-based approach to the issues and accounts for the various reasons people turn to alcohols. Modern alcohol rehab programs help people to identify their problems and show them methods they can use to overcome them. They learn new, healthier coping methods and have a much deeper understanding of their decision making process. Empowering them gives them the confidence and the ability to change.
