PCP Rehab

Phencyclidine (PCP) is a dissociative anaesthetic which causes users to feel detached from their environment and in larger doses can cause hallucinations, psychological intervention in the form of pcp drug rehab is often advisable. It normally found as a white, crystalline powder, but can also be bought in liquid and pill forms. Users can experience seizures, coma and death in extreme cases, and may suffer serious psychological consequences. Drug rehab centres use a combination of drug treatment and counselling to combat PCP addiction.

PCP can be smoked, snorted, swallowed or injected. The white powder can be easily dissolved in water, and then injected or applied to leafy material and smoked. Injecting the drug provides a direct route to the bloodstream and a more rapid onset of effects, but also opens the user up to additional risks such as HIV or hepatitis infection. Users who swallow the drug in pill or capsule form delay the onset of effects, but don’t open themselves up to additional risks such as damage to the central cartilage of the nose or those associated with smoke inhalation.

The effects of PCP include feelings of intoxication, hallucinations, euphoria, loss of motor coordination and paranoia. In low doses, the drug causes similar effects to alcohol, slurring speech, reducing coordination and causing numbness in the extremities. Larger doses add in the hallucinogenic and euphoric effects of the drug. Users can experience disassociation from surroundings, disordered thinking and delusions. In big doses, nausea, loss of balance, blurred vision and dizziness are more common.

All hallucinogenic drugs carry a risk of a “bad trip.” This is when the ordinarily playful and fleeting hallucinations turn terrifying and menacing. PCP seems to cause bad trips more often than drugs such as LSD, and is more closely associated with violent outbursts, suicidal thoughts and self harm. Users can also experience extreme paranoia and anxiety in a bad trip, and often lose touch with reality. PCP users have been known to drown in pools or jump to their death under the influence of the drug. Most drug rehab centres are set up to deal with bad trips, and provide a safe environment with supervision from medical staff.

The main risks of PCP mean that users should seriously consider drug rehab if they are addicted to it. In adolescents, use of PCP can disrupt normal growth and also impair future learning. The sedative effects of the drug also mean that it can cause shallow breathing, coma and death. These effects are more likely if the drug is taken in combination with another drug with similar effects, such as alcohol or benzodiazepines. The drug’s psychological effects can also have a lasting impact on users’ minds, and drug rehab centres offer counselling in order to combat these effects.

Drug rehab programs are often required for PCP user because it is an addictive drug. Users experience cravings for the drug, resulting from psychological dependence. This basically means that the user’s brain is so used to the chemical that it has come to rely on it for normal functioning. Drug rehab centres combine medical treatment using benzodiazepines and anti-psychotics with psychological counselling to treat addiction. During withdrawal, the patient’s breathing, circulation and body temperature are closely monitored.
